Video Captures Robbery of Suburban Sandwich Shop

The Tribune has video of a man robbing a Des Plaines Subway sandwich shop this morning, in what was just an appetizer for a litany of crimes committed by the man.

The suspect faked out Subway employee Jose Santiago by feigning wanting to buy a cookie. As soon as Santiago opened the cash register, the suspect, who has a record of 27 arrests, punched him and went for the cash drawer. Santiago grabbed a knife and proceeded to defend himself from the suspect.

The suspect grabbed some cash, then is chased out of the Subway by Santiago. The suspect then assaulted a cab driver, stole the cabbie's keys and proceeded to lead police on a high-speed chase through several northern suburbs and into Chicago, where he crashed into a school bus.

The kicker in all this? Santiago said he wouldn't have put up a fight if the suspect was simply honest about trying to rob him.
