Around Town Fridays: Jonathan Lurie

By Chuck Sudo in Arts & Entertainment on Apr 1, 2011 6:00PM

Jonathan Lurie heads a new client development team for Smith Bucklin during the day, but he says he's always had a penchant for the visual arts. "I was making oil paintings as early as second grade. I had a darkroom in high school and I studied photography at the University of Wisconsin," Lurie said.

Lurie has rekindled his passion for photography within the past five years, after he purchased his first DSLR camera, a Nikon D50. He still has that camera, but his main camera these days is a Nikon D300. One aspect of Lurie's photos we've always admired is his knack for a perfect exposure.

"For me, photography is all about getting great exposure and I try to use as much natural light as possible," Lurie told us. He does do the occasional shot using high-dynamic range (HDR) imaging and is fluent in Photoshop, "but I'm not an HDR specialist."

Tonight, Lurie has an opening of an exhibition of his photography at Urban Lux (230 W. Huron, Suite 2W) starting at 6:30 p.m. Urban Lux is a real estate company specializing in apartment rentals, but they have a separate space in their building that they use for photography and art exhibitions. Lurie discovered the space through connections he made on flickr and says that the exhibition is an ongoing one.
