Kneel Before Zod: Michael Shannon Cast As Superman Villain

2009_02_22_michaelshannon.jpg The forthcoming Superman movie Man of Steel certainly seems to have a mottled appearance. Cringeworthy: it'll be directed by Zach Snyder (Sucker Punch); Clark Kent's dad will be played by Kevin Costner; we don't really need either a new Superman movie or a new superhero movie, period. Possibly cool: Christopher Nolan is producing; it'll be partially shot in Chicago and Plano, Illinois; the character of General Zod will return and will be played by Michael Shannon.

Terence Stamp made for a fierce, sanctimonious General Zod in Superman II. "Zod is not only one of Superman's most formidable enemies, but one of the most significant because he has insights into Superman that others don't. Michael is a powerful actor who can project both the intelligence and the malice of the character, making him perfect for the role," Snyder said. Indeed. Shannon, Oscar-nominated for Revolutionary Road as well as a semi-frequent presence on the Chicago stage, has creepy intensity to spare and thus is an absolutely spot-on choice for the role.

Anyhow, count us intrigued. The movie, which will star Henry Cavill as Superman and Amy Adams as Lois Lane, is due for release next year.
