Sushi and Sake
Make your reservations now for SUSHISAMBA rio’s Sake and Sushi 101. We’ve never done this class ourselves, but we’ve heard from other past attendees that it’s a great deal. For $75, you will learn about the history and making of sake, taste a range of different sakes paired with appetizer bites and then move over to sushi. Attendees will also learn how to make sushi at home, get to eat some and bring home a cookbook. Classes are always on Tuesday nights from 6:30 - 8:30, and there are currently spots on May 10, June 14, July 12 and August 9. Call 312.595.2300 for reservations.
Live Documentary
The Weather Underground director Sam Greene and musician Dave Cref are coming together Saturday, August 16, to construct a “live documentary” called Utopia in Four Movements as part of CIMM Fest. In previous performances Greene handles the visuals and narration while Cref provides the soundtrack in hopes of creating a live audio-visual experience that attempts to “sift through the history of the utopian impulse with audiences and search for insights about the way to build a vision of the future based on humankind’s noblest impulses.” We have no idea what that actually means, which makes us want to explore the concept even more! Utopia in Four Movements plays at WPAC, 2215 W. North at 8 p.m. Admission is $15 and tickets are available here.
Music
Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars are a group of musicians who formed at a West African refugee camp after fleeing their home country's civil war. What turned into an informal group formed to keep their spirits up has since grown into an international touring sensation, with their amazing story featured on PBS, CNN and Oprah. The Sierra Leone Refugee All Stars play Mayne Stage tonight at 9:30 in an 18-and-over show. Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the door..
