State Says "Bye Bye" to Catholic Charities

2011_05_27_catholic.png Since Catholic Charities for Illinois' dioceses have made it abundantly clear they'll be refusing foster care and adoption services to same-sex and unmarried couples over their objections to the Civil Unions Law, the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services decided today to sever foster care and adoption contracts with them.

A fax from DCFS Director Erin McEwen to Catholic Charities of Peoria CEO Patricia Fox reads, "because your agency has made it clear that it does not intend to comply with the Illinois Religious Freedom Protection and Civil Union Act... (t)hat law applies to foster care and adoption services. Thus, there is no meeting of the minds as to the FY12 Foster Care and Adoption Contracts."

Gov. Quinn defended the decision, saying Catholic Charities has "made a choice" and Illinois has a law and isn't going back. LAwyers for Catholic Charities said they'll file an injunction.
