Afternoon Box Score: Cubs Survive Marlins, Marmol

By Chuck Sudo in News on Jul 15, 2011 9:30PM

Cubs 2, Marlins 1

Another gem of a performance was turned in by a Cubs starter today, only this time Carlos Marmol didn't torpedo the effort. Ryan Dempster struck out nine Marlins over eight shutout innings while the Cubs scored two unearned runs in the fourth inning. But once again Mike Quade inexplicably turned to Marmol to close out the game only to have his closer be ineffective. Marmol gave up an RBI single to Logan Morrison, which was enough for Quade to hand the game over to Sean Marshall for the final out.
