Phillies 9, Cubs 1

On a day where it was so hot that the gulls refused to eat the scraps left behind by the bleacher bums, the Phillies were cool as a cucumber. Phillies second baseman Jimmy Rollins went 3-for-5 with two home runs (one from each side of the plate), a double and three RBI, and the Phillies hitters chased Ryan Dempster from the mound after three innings. Dempster gave up six runs in that span, Carlos Pena committed two errors (adding to the Cubs major league leading total) and the Cubs lineup made Vance Worley look like a world beater. Add it all up and it amounts to the Cubs losing their ninth straight series. Now they have a day off before three day games at Wrigley against the Astros this weekend.

  • As the in-house Phillies fan, I'd like to point out two corrections:

    1. Jimmy Rollins is our shortstop, not second. Chase Utley plays second. Utley didn't have as good a day as Rollins, but he did go 2-3 with two doubles, an RBI, and a walk.

    2. Don't blame the Cubs' bats - Vance Worley kind of HAS been a world beater. He's now 6-1 and carries the lowest ERA among the starting pitchers (which, as you may know, includes All-Stars Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee, and Cole Hamels). Yesterday was his fourth straight win. I'm not saying the Cubs aren't bad, I'm just saying that Vance Worley may be quite good.
