Goodbye, Margie's Pub

A poster to Yelp writes that Margie's Pub in Lincoln Square served up their last shot and beer last night.

We've called the venerable dive a few times this afternoon and no one's picked up the phone. If Margie's has indeed closed another part of what we loved about Lincoln Square goes into the mystic. Margie's stayed the same as Lincoln Square went from sketchy neighborhood through gentrification and condo multiplication, keeping their drink prices affordable and the menu simple the entire time.

Now someone needs to liberate that beautiful vintage Old Style sign hanging outside Margie's. Karl?

Jumped the shark when 50 cent Old Style Mondays became 1 dollar Old Style Mondays, but still a beloved institution.

  • Noooooooo....it was bad enough when they got rid of the second pool table with the thundercats logo on it. Where am I going to go for a frosty mug and commentary from someone else's hilarious alcoholic grandmothers?

Yeah, when was Lincoln Square sketchy? I've only been here 15 years. It was very different then, but it was in no way sketchy.

Even as far back as the mid-'80s, it wasn't anywhere near 'sketchy.' Unless by 'sketchy,' you mean 'affordable.'

I'm still trying to remember when Lincoln Square was sketchy. I remember when it was ungentrified and full of working ethnics, but I don't remember the sketchy era.

Stopped in Saturday for one last drink.  I'll miss that orange kool aid and vodka "house shot"

I take comfort in knowing that somewhere in the city, some bar has slipped into dive status and will someday be revered at its passing.
