Marilyn Monroe Statue Tagged

The Marilyn Monroe statue at Pioneer Court has now joined the ranks of other statues and local landmarks to have suffered the stain of graffiti. A hearty portion of the statue's right leg was tagged overnight.

Security cameras are often trained on Pioneer Court but it's unknown whether any of them have a clear view of the tagger at this time. Considering that, the statue's proximity to the NBC 5 and WGN-AM radio studios and the crowds surrounding the Monroe statue since its unveiling, we're surprised it was tagged at all.

  • This is like defacing the Athena statue in a Greek temple... What is wrong with these people? Who would even be sleazy and stupid enough to do something like this? This is my favorite work of art in Chicago by far -- sure beats the chagal and the Picasso monkey!! I can't believe they made metal look so graceful, wispy, and soft-- alive even--just like the marble statues of greek goddesses. I was going to Chicago today with my family mainly to see and take pictures by this beautiful sculpture. It is not just beautiful and emotionally stunning, it is fun too! Guess not now. We will have to wait until they can clean it up.

  • A decent attempt at satire, my friend.

I thought it was funny but a bit too obvious. No one who really honestly feels that way about Upskirt Marilyn would even know about Chagall. But I'll give Spiral an extra point for purposefully missing the second L and lower-casing the C.

  • Not sure what the punishment is for tagging (I'll look it up later), but as a victim of 'tagging' personally and professionally, I think they should tie the criminals up and have the public able to tag them.  Public humiliation may be a more effective punishment than a fine or whatever.

Taggers should have their arms chopped off.
They'll never do it again & serve as an object lesson to others.

Verdad! This kind of shit NEVER would have happened under Franco!

  • Hmm ... James Franco always seemed pretty mellow to me.

  • slatsg

    He's so dreamy.

  • LogopolisMike

That's because he's always falling asleep.

  • This is why we can't have nice things!

    Oh wait, never mind.

Ha-ha. I love the reliable squareness of the Chicago Tribune. What regular folk know to be gang graffiti, the Tribune reporter calls "doodles."

  • Hooray!  If we're lucky, the cleaners will "accidentally" push it over and we can be rid of the monstrosity.
