Unemployed Carpenter Finds Cool Lettuce in Garden ($150K Worth)

It pays to grow your own. An unemployed carpenter says he found $150,000 cash in his garden Monday.

Wayne Sabaj, who lives in unincorporated McHenry County, went out to pluck some broccoli from his garden for dinner. Among his peppers he found a duffel bag filled with $20 bills, the Tribune reported:

He went inside to tell his father of his discovery. “I told him, we have enough problems, now we got another problem. Look what I found in the garden,” he recalled. “What are we going to do with all this money?”

Fearing the cash was loot from a bank robbery, Sabaj called the McHenry County Sheriff’s Department. When officers arrived to investigate Sabaj’s garden, they found another cash-stuffed bag.

Neither bag was buried or appeared to have been there for very long, authorities told the Tribune. The Sherriff’s office told the Northwest Herald that no recent burglaries had been reported.

If the owner of the cash returns to the garden, he or she will find a handwritten note from the McHenry County sheriff that reads, “Please Call.”

If no legitimate owner can be found, Sabaj might be able to keep the cash.
