Chicago psych up-and-comers Rabble Rabble, Implodes, and Killer Moon share company with some of Atlanta's mind-melting underground favorites in label Spective Audio's Vital Sound I cassette compilation, which aptly documents the surprisingly diverse sounds of the rock subgenre. Set for release in early September, Vital Sound I has two sides, one for the Atlanta bands, one for the Chicago bands.

The Atlanta side kicks off with the tie-died organ sounds and jangly guitar of quartet Sovus Radio (perfect for fans of 60s pop), before further going down the rabbit hole with acts like the narcotic, kraut-influenced Soft Opening; the noisy, into-the-red psych-punkers The N.E.C.; and the ambient, gothic Brainworlds, amongst other noteworthy ATL acts like All The Saints and The Sunny Muffdivers.

The Chicago side, meanwhile, features brand-new songs from the likes of you-gotta-see-them-live quartet Rabble Rabble, drone-rockers Implodes, and the Great Society Mind Destroyers. All of the contributions are excellent. Also featured are The Leavitt Ours (the band of Spective Audio man Nicholas Zettel) and Killer Moon, whose cut provides a heavier, doom-flavored edge to the comp.

Vital Sound I documents the inspiring creativity of two burgeoning music scenes. There may not be a need for another summer of love, but good psychedelia can soundtrack any season, and Spective Audio's compilation will surely stay with its listeners through turbulent times and copacetic calms. The cassette costs $7, features art by drone artist Cinchel, and can be ordered here.
