Swastikas in Uptown

Chicagoist Photos Flickr pool contributor Elliot "Bluelliot" Mandel sent this photo earlier in the week. Mandel said he noticed it while at the Argyle Red Line platform and said he notified the city.

Mandel asked, "How long it will remain up there to greet (Red Line riders) every morning?" I did a search of gang activity for that part of Uptown, using the lists and interactive maps at Chicagogangs.org, looking for clues as to who the "$BOY$" are in the tag.

Chicagogang.org's map of the North side indicates that part of Uptown is sort of a no-man's land between Latin Kings territory to the north and Gangster Disciples turf at Lawrence and Winthrop.

Back to the question Mandel asked: is the tag still there?

  • I'm sure they're just practicing Buddhists.

  • Can't they just leave one part of Chicago to Chicago?

While they are at it, they might want to get rid of the "FUCK URSELF" above it. Kids do not need to see that kind of awful spelling.

Upon further info provided by flickr user Chicago's Cold War, the tags belong to the Manic Latin Disciples-- the graffiti was still there this morning. -EM
