Indiana Man on Moped Just Wanted to Keep the Party Going

Darin Medley is hardcore. The 48-year-old Valparaiso, IN resident had an evening that usually is the plot to a stoner comedy, only there's no hot woman waiting for him at the end credits.

Medley was pulled over by Porter County (IN) Sheriff's officer Brian Gill after receiving a call of a man on a yellow moped "recklessly swerving." Medley tried to pass the swerving off to Gill as a rear wheel that wasn't in true. When Gill went to his squad car to run Medley's name through his computer, Medley took off and ran.

We'll just list what happened next:

  • Gill threatened to release his police dog, to which Medley responded, "Do you want to die?"
  • Gill released the dog.
  • While the dog, Dolar, clamped down on Medley's right leg, Medley allegedly made a grab for Gill's handgun.
  • Once Dolar let go of Medley's leg and Medley was being carted off in an ambulance, Medley offered to forget the whole thing and not sue Gill if he would only be charged with OWI.
  • While being treated for his wounds at the Porter hospital emergency room, Medley asked for a beer.
  • Medley refused Breathalyzer, but a blood alcohol test done at the hospital indicated he had a BAC of 0.26

Medley now faces a litany of charges, the most serious being a felony charge of disarming a law enforcement officer. He also faces a lesser felony intimidation charge, resisting arrest, battery, and operating while intoxicated charge he didn't want in the first place.

    Kenny Powers in Indiana.

  • As someone born and raised in Indiana, I just shrug and say "nothing new here folks, move along."

  • Other variations of this story include the man operating a motorized cooler or recliner.

  • i have seen both. Shudder.

  • I hear the Benny Hill theme when I imagine this scenario.

It just goes to prove what I've always said: Mopeds are the Devil's scooters.
