Plainfield Native McCarthy Wins Emmy

Last night's Emmy Awards, which are supposed to celebrate the best in television, royally sucked last night. One of the highlights of the awards was Melissa McCarthy's win for Best Actress in a Comedy for her role as one of the title characters in Mike & Molly.

“I feel like I’m going to wake up, and, you know, it’s going to be like 4:30 AM and my daughter’s going to be like, ‘Uh, can I have some milk?’” the “Mike & Molly” star told Access’ Shaun Robinson backstage at the Emmy Awards in Los Angeles.

McCarthy's win was something of a shocker as most prognosticators picked Amy Poehler to win for Parks & Recreation. But McCarthy's talent, her chemistry with co-star Billy Gardner and the empathy they bring to their characters overcome the broadly written fat jokes that form the foundation of the show.

McCarthy's Emmy win is the latest nod in a breakout year for the Plainfield native, Joliet Catholic grad and cousin of Jenny McCarthy. Mike & Molly is a bona fide hit for CBS, McCarthy was a scene stealer in Bridesmaids and she's set to host Saturday Night Live Oct. 1. For those of you who knew McCarthy when she played Sookie St. James on Gilmore Girls, you can say "I told you so."

She is amazing in everything she does and the fact that she came up with that Comedy Actress skit makes her even more awesome                 http://bit.ly/oUGer7

  • Mike and Molly started out doing fat jokes, but the writers had moved beyond that by the end of the season. McCarthy and Gardner were just too good a pair for that kind of humor.
