Hipstamatic Heads To Wicker Park

2011_09_wp_hipstamatic.jpg

We see the latest update for the popular Hipstamatic iPhone app includes the option to download the Wicker Park HipstaPak. It features the Lucas AB2 lens, Jolly Rainbo 2X flash and Damen camera case. We can't make this stuff up. We're now just as cool as Williamsburg and Austin! our only question is since the majority of Wicker Park's (and, erm, Williamsburg's) population is stroller pushing yuppies should they still be allowed to use the app?

  • One of the founders of Hipstamatic is from Chicago and possibly lived in the Wicker Park, which would explain this. Not sure of his yuppie or breeding status.

  • Ruthie Kott

Here's an answer to that: http://neighborhoods.redeyechi...

  • Thanks, they hit me up over the weekend to explain Hipstmatic's Chicago roots but the interview is more illuminating. And now I kind of wish they HAD named it SoWP.

  • Who is he and can he explain the story behind the "Lucas Lens" ... and if it's based on a mutual friend of ours?

Future generations will be confused by the sudden surge of crappy cell phone photos that seem to represent the early 2000's.

  • Future generation will be drawing crappy cell phone photos by hand in an effort to be "even more authentic."

  • That said, I'm still a fan of cell camera filters...

  • Navin_Johnson

They're fun, but they seem to be replacing actual cameras in many instances.  Thinking of all the facebook photos of huge wilderness landscapes with the person going "you had to be there".  Yeah, or maybe you could have used something better than a cellphone camera to capture it.  Use the cell to capture those daily fun or interesting moments, if you're going to go look at the Grand Canyon bring a damned camera.  I'm not that much of a stick in the mud but those comments make me laugh/shake my head.

  • Considering the resolution, most cellphone cameras are now just as good as your basic digital point and shoot. So to those that can't afford an SLR I think a cellphone is a reasonable camera.

I do own an SLR, and that's what I take to shoot shows or things under more demanding conditions (light/movement) but I use my cellphone for almost everything else. And as for the Grand Canyon, since it's so well lit andisn't moving (hopefully) much at all I'd be OK seeing someone capturing the scene with their iPhone. Of course i hope they'd snap a few shots sans filter before resorting to the Hipstamatic/Instagram but if that's how they'd prefer to remember their own moment it who am I to judge?

Among these folks that's not a problem at all.

  • I am a stroller pushing yuppie and proud of it. Then again, Wicker Park isn't a trend for me. It's where we live. When skinny jeans are no longer cool... I will still live here. :)

  • Don't worry, I don't think anyone who ACTUALLY lives in Wicker Park thinks skinny jeans are cool.
