Weekend Diversion: Melissa McCarthy Chugs Ranch Dressing on SNL

Emmy Award winner and Plainfield native Melissa McCarthy hosted Saturday Night Live last night, and as an alumna of the LA improv group The Groundlings, McCarthy looked more like a cast member. In the sketch above, McCarthy plays an overly ambitious ranch dressing taste-tester. The clip shows off her raw comedic talent more than any episode of the lackluster sitcom Mike & Molly.

  • As an actress who has recently earned her more-than-deserved share of clout in the entertainment industry, I would have expected Ms. McCarthy to take a stand against performing what was essentially the same fat joke over and over again. Would it have been so wrong for an equal amount of the show’s skits to not have anything to do with girth or an over-hungry attitude?

She struck me as a bit of Chris Farley, with a hint of Ricky Gervais here and there.  She did seem like a cast member, but given the generally crappy level of work they're doing (outside of the Lonely Island guys), that isn't exactly a compliment...
