Who says University of Chicago students are just a bunch of bookish nerds? Chicago Maroon photo editor Darren Leow got a front row seat to a bit of student street justice as a gaggle of U of C scholars put the squeeze on a would-be laptop larcenist in the Regenstein Library this week.

A contracted employee for the library was arrested after being caught in the act of trying to swipe a student’s laptop. The student gave chase, attracting others in pursuit. Eventually the alleged thief was stopped when students outside the library stood in front of the glass doors, preventing him from exiting the building while others restrained him for police.

The Regenstein Library sits on the site of the first Stagg Field where the university enjoyed its football heyday a century ago. No doubt the Hall of Fame talents from the old Monsters of the Midway teams would appreciate the current students’ brawny efforts to get tough on campus crime!

Another consequence of the gun placed to the UofC's head by community groups.

What does this comment mean in the context of the story?

The UofC has a huge amount of pressure to use "local" vendors and to employ people from the surrounding neighborhoods. It's well known among the student body that if the guy pushing a mop looks like the kind of person you wouldn't want to meet in a dark alley, that guy pushing the mop most likely is the kind of person you wouldn't want to meet in a dark alley. There is a large amount of property crime at the school, and considering the buildings are mostly locked down 24/7 it's not the neighbors. It's certainly not the dorks that go to school there. That leaves who as the prime suspect? Just don't get caught saying it too loudly or Hairston and Cochran will retaliate against the school in a petty but annoying way (e.g. by refusing to repave 60th)
