If you're a farmers market junkie, a fan of sustainable eating or just a lover of good meats, the idea of buying a local turkey has probably crossed your mind. Unfortunately, most of us don't do a very good job of planning ahead - and most local turkeys (especially heirloom turkeys) are spoken for way back in the summer. Luckily, Uncommon Ground and Door to Door Organics have come to the rescue.

Gunthorp Farms turkeys are the favorite of a lot of local retailers - even our beloved Butcher & Larder was accepting pre-orders for them, though the window closed last week. Last year, Rick Bayless thanked Gunthorp Farms for their great turkey! Door to Door Organics and Uncommon Ground have teamed up to get you the turkey of your dreams. You can order them from now until this Thursday, Nov. 17.

If you want to order a turkey, email orders@doortodoororganics.com. Include the size of turkey you want (either 15-17 lbs. or 17-20), your name and your email address. The turkeys will be available for pickup at Uncommon Ground on Clark this Saturday or at Uncommon Ground on Devon Sunday. The price is $3.49/lb.

Get your local turkey ordered - we wouldn't be surprised if they sell out.

  • Plainville farms is also a good placeĀ  to check if you are looking for a turkey that is raised naturally and hormone free, such kind of turkey are much more flavorful than the ones that are fed with antibiotic.

I'm picking up a bourbon red turkey from Caveny Farms at the Green City Market on Saturday. It was a little pricey though, around $8 per pound. This will be the first non grocery store turkey for my family, who I will lie to if they ask the cost. :)
