Clueless Congressman Says Occupy Movement Is "Clueless"

2011_11_21_joe_walsh.png Illinois Congressman Joe Walsh spoke again. At a town hall in Gurnee -- is that all he does? -- a constituent asked Walsh for his thoughts on the Occupy Wall Street movement. Walsh is fiery at the beginning of this exchange, calling protesters "generally spoiled, pampered, unfocused, clueless young people and a smattering of other people who don't understand this country and are advocating anti-American solutions."

Crain's writes:

When asked if that "anti-American" tag includes veterans who risked their life abroad before joining protests here, Mr. Walsh agrees that it does.

"I don't know how many veterans are part of the Occupy protests. I can't imagine it's many," he said. "But anyone who would advocate Socialist solutions to certain problems in this country, they don't understand this country."

"I think the Tea Party movement is a real movement, and I think it's bigger than either political party."

It was just less than two weeks ago, Walsh lost his cool at a town hall meeting and shouted at constituents about banks and the Occupy movement. He said, "Don’t blame banks, and don’t blame the marketplace for the mess we’re in right now! I am tired of hearing that crap! This pisses me off! Too many people don’t listen." He ultimately blamed that on too much coffee.

What's his excuse now?

By the way, have any of you at Occupy Chicago seen someone crapping on an American flag? The guy at 8:05 says he has never seen an American flag in Occupy videos. He says they're "defecating" on it.

Here are the IL reps that voted more jobs away:

    Rep. Judy Biggert [R, IL-13]Rep. Danny Davis [D, IL-7]Rep. Bob Dold [R, IL-10]Rep. Randy Hultgren [R, IL-14]
    Rep. Timothy Johnson [R, IL-15]
    Rep. Adam Kinzinger [R, IL-11]
    Rep. Donald Manzullo [R, IL-16]
    Rep. Mike Quigley [D, IL-5]
    Rep. Peter Roskam [R, IL-6]
    Rep. Robert Schilling [R, IL-17]
    Rep. Aaron Schock [R, IL-18]
    Rep. John Shimkus [R, IL-19]
    Rep. Joe Walsh [R, IL-8]

See that guy on the bottom? Yeah, that's good ole hard working Joe Walsh! For the working man! As long as the working man works in China, Mexico, Columbia, Korea etc. just like the rest of these reps.  I would suggest you have a look at some of these "stimulation laws" or "trade deals" and how we were told they would impact the economy and then what they actually did. For example, NAFTA was supposed to increase jobs, benefit small businesses and increase our trade surplus. Not only did it not do what we were told it would do it actually did the polar opposite and only allowed the large multinationals to move their operations to Mexico and all the jobs with it. We lost jobs, went from a trade surplus to a deficit and so on. Dont bellieve me? Look it up yourself! Kinda like deregulation. What do they say? Deregulation is unnecessary and drives costs up so these places dont hire. I agree! We deregulated the S&Ls in the 80s and had to bail them out then all financial institutions in 2000 and had to bail them out so, yeah deregulation costs TRILLIONS of taxpayer dollars! This destroys the market, eliminates jobs and so on.

It's obvious that there are many Kool-Aid drinkers out there because no matter how many facts can be brought up to state the obvious you will still stick to your ideology even when those facts make it ridiculous to do so.

We carry and wave a lot of U.S. flags on La Salle and Jackson.  Early on I saw some people carrying them upside down.  I told them to turn it right side up.  I said, "We don't want this to be an anti-American movement.".  They said it wasn't anti American it was an international distress symbol.  It means America is in trouble.  I said, "Turn 'em back up anyway.  We don't want anybody getting the wrong idea.".  They agreed and turned them back up.

  • We see Joe as a true American!  Sorry folks-his views have a much bigger appeal to the real hard working Americans that are being screwed by huge government then the protesters wanting their FREE stuff do!  We are not not socialist and YOU are not entitled to what I earn, which isn't much under this corrupt administration.

  • Geenius_at_Wrok

Personally, the only "FREE stuff" I'm looking for are free speech, free assembly, and free and fair elections. And also respect and dignity, which don't cost you anything except a bit of your sense of superiority, which you haven't earned.

As for what Joe Walsh earns, I believe a court stated that his ex-wife and children are entitled to a portion of it, which he hasn't provided. I thought conservatives were "pro-family"?

  • djc84

Well Diane, you're a sucker.  Just like so many other voters are. the protesters arent protesting for "free stuff" but Joe Walsh is more than happy to tell you that because youll believe it. Joe Walsh is one of those who voted for the Obama backed free trade agreements to go through. These agreements are PROVEN job killers that decimate the middle class, kill our trade balance and do nothing more than export more jobs overseas. That's the Joe Walsh you support. Why do you support corporate welfare and socialism?

  • ChicagoD

Diane, if we compare tax returns and my family pays more taxes than you do, can I tell you to shut up? Also, can we admit that I am a truer American than you?

In addition, what kind of welfare queen are you that your income depends on the "corrupt administration."

    Q.E.D. indeed.

  • Navin_Johnson

Also, I know you're trolling hard, but in what way do you figure that I am taking, or asking for what you earn?  I'm a supporter of #OWS and have been to number of protests myself so I fall under your disparaging remarks. Also it's rich to hear somebody who appears to be a "boomer" talking about having what they "earned" taken away from them by younger people.

  • Navin_Johnson

    Dear "True Americans",
If you want to maintain your credibility as "true" Americans, instead of stealth sekrit Frenchmen or something....you need to:

    a) Be deadbeat dad trash
    b) Work on being a 'grade a' ranting and raving asshole
    c) Lose all measure of common sense when it comes to economic policy making.
    d) Insult U.S. veterans.
    e) Lick the boots of banker criminals.

  • ReverendSlappy

Oh, also, watching "Joe" get smoked -- absolutely creamed! -- by Randy Hultgren (and then maybe watching him lose to Tammy Duckworth) is gonna be a real treat.

... true American! ... screwed by huge government... protesters wanting their FREE stuff... We are not not (sic) socialist and YOU are not entitled to what I earn ... corrupt administration.

    Q.E.D.

"generally spoiled, pampered, unfocused, clueless" seems like Walsh is describing himself.
"generally... unfocused, clueless ... people and a smattering of other people who don't understand this country and are advocating anti-American solutions."  With this edit, he's clearly describing the Tea Party in the real world or at street-level, at least from my experience (trying to keep my lunch down) while listening to various kook speakers at their rallies.

But Walsh has every reason to be freaked out.  He has clearly made a mess of his professional, financial and personal life, and being a member of congress is his lifeline.  While there are clueless kooks in both the tea party and the occupy movements, there are plenty of people in both who have their heads screwed on straight.  And just about all of those sane people would probably agree that Joe Walsh is an embarrassment to the nation and shouldn't be a member of Congress.  He's welcome to try all the demagoguery and screaming he wants, I doubt that a majority of voters are going to support him next year.

Oh, and saying that veterans who are active in the Occupy movement are "anti-American" is asking for his sorry no-military-service rear end to be confronted in public by veterans who might disagree with his characterization.  That's a video of the twerp I'll bother to watch.

  • ChicagoD

It's hard to imagine that even ideologues see this guy as anything other than an idiot. I mean, no matter how much of a True Believer you are, do you not see when another True Believer is a half wit?

  • This sentiment requires that the first True Believer not also be a half wit. The number of people displaying a low percentage of wit is far, far higher than any of us would like to accept. These people truly believe hard enough to explain away almost anything guys like Walsh may pull. Look at the True Believers you've known in your life, or even on this site. They'll happily ignore anything that threatens their world view.

  • Navin_Johnson

There's a photo that exists of some dumb crusty punk in Oregon doing this at some kind of protest several years ago, before the Tea Party or #OWS.  Right wing bloggers have been dishonestly forwarding it around and saying it's current and from #OWS.  That's where this meme is coming from.

  • Nicholas

I wonder about all the people seen here listening to him. Are they all thinking "Geez, this guy is a douchebag"?  Because that is what I think every time I see him speak on anything.  If they aren't thinking that, what the hell is wrong with them?

  • I think one of the most difficult things for sensible people to accept is that many, many people in the world are just plain dumb. The moment that realization comes is the moment idealism becomes cynicism.

  • ReverendSlappy

Kind of non sequitur, but an amusing quote nonetheless: Adlai Stevenson is rumored to have said during his presidential campaign, "Every thinking person in this country will vote for me. Problem is, I need a majority."

(If I've already mentioned that here, my apologies.)

  • Ha! If you've mentioned it, I haven't seen it. I'll have to remember this.
