Gunman Loose After Fatal Shooting at NIU

2011_11_16_NIU.jpg Police in DeKalb are looking for the person who shot and killed a Northern Illinois University student after an argument at a party early this morning.

Steven R. Agee II, 22, of south suburban Park Forest, was found with a gunshot wound to the chest around 2:10 a.m. at an apartment in the 800 block of Edgebrook Drive. Agee was a sociology major at NIU, and his parents were to drive to DeKalb to pick him up for the Thanksgiving holiday.

NIU issued a warning for students to stay inside, but DeKalb police said the incident is isolated. DeKalb Police Chief Bill Feithen has scheduled a press conference for 1:30 p.m. in which they plan to announce a "significant development" in the case.

Agee's death is the latest violent incident at NIU in recent years. There were the 2008 shootings on campus by Steven Kazmierczak, which was the focus of a study on genetic connections to post-traumatic stress disorder released in September.

In October 2010, NIU student Antoinette "Toni" Keller went missing. Her charred remains were later found in a park. William Curl has been charged in Keller's death and has been ordered to undergo a psychological evaluation.

NIU football player Devon Butler was injured in an April drive-by shooting and missed this football season. Last month, NIU shut down a campus building after it received a bomb threat.
