Memories of the Snowpocalypse

Like it or not (we happen to like it it), wintertime is here, bringing with it inevitable recollections of last winter's gigantic snowstorm. Whether you call it Snowpocalypse, Snowmageddon, or Blizzaster 2011, we agree with chicagobars that the video below captures it perfectly.

Coudal Partners is a Chicago design and branding studio whose offices are near Union Park. After the storm hit in February, a vacant lot nearby became a dumping ground for hundreds of thousands of pounds of snow. They obviously recognize a good opportunity when they see one because the result was "Above the Sun," a video that cleverly transforms a huge pile of snow into a towering K2-like peak.

Who knows whether this winter will measure up to last year's ... but if it does, here's hoping Coudal mounts a sequel.

I bought a box of wine on the way home that night and stayed home the next day. I found out no one in my building owns a snow shovel. We're so lame we expect the landlord to clear the walks for us.

  • That's like the snow I had to walk through to school every day when I was a kid. Up hill. Both ways.

That storm was a total nonevent for all of us who were not stupid enough to try and drive down LSD.  We had a great time. I took a snow day and joined everyone on my block shoveling. Later, we walked to Lincoln Park to enjoy the beautiful snow-covered scenery.  Then, we went on with our normal routine. We like snow.

I went snowshoeing down Logan Boulevard.  It was awesome.

  • Tired of all this hype and names such as Snowpocalypse, Snowmageddon, or SNOMG.  It was a heavy snow that came, was quickly plowed and melted away in a couple weeks.  The city didn't stop moving so get over it.  Tired of all this weather hype.  Every so many years a large storm comes.  Most it does not occur.  It is not the first, nor last nor anything unusual.  Sells newspapers and generates click throughs I suppose.

  • I like snow.
