Lawsuit Claims Teacher Forced Kindergartner To Crawl Back To Class With Broken Leg, Concussion
The parents of a six-year-old claim in a lawsuit filed last week that teachers at their son's school forced him to crawl back to class after he broke his leg and suffered a concussion on the school's playground last year.
Rahul Chandani was a kindergartner at Devonshire Elementary School in Skokie Jan. 3, 2011 when he slipped on a patch of snow and suffered a concussion and fractured tibia. One of Chandani's teachers allegedly told him, ""You’re a big boy — I can’t carry you." So Chandani crawled 200-300 feet back to the school building. It's unknown if the teacher was trying to get Chandani to tough it out or was making a reference to his husky frame.
Chandani's mother, Priya, was called to the school and drove her son to the hospital. He missed six weeks of school and his parents claim he suffered emotional distress as a result of the incident.
“If someone did that to me as an adult, I’d slap them," Priya Chandani said. Or make sure they never taught kindergarten again.
The Chandani family seeks $200,000 in damages.
