Taxi Fuel Surchage Becomes Permanent
The $1 fuel surcharge that has been consistently in effect since 2009 will now become a permanent part of taxi cab fares. This makes no difference in how much you pay when you get in a cab. Rosemary Krimbel, commissioner of the Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection, told the Sun-Times:
“We get so many complaints from passengers because they don’t understand why are you adding a dollar. Since it’s consistently been in place for two years, we’ll move it to the flag pull. That will be easier to understand for passengers and consumers.”
Cab drivers told the Sun-Times that it doesn't help them economically, and they still need a fare increase, but it "helps ease the burden and the headache of having to explain the fuel surcharge."
