Opera

Theater Oobleck is producing its first opera. The Hunchback Variations takes the form of a panel discussion between Quasimodo and Ludwig van Beethoven on their attempt to create a mysterious sound effect called for in Anton Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard. Playing out over 11 scenes, or “variations,” the story details the duo’s collaboration—one doomed by their mutual deafness, their unpleasant working conditions, and the fact that Beethoven has not yet finished reading the The Cherry Orchard. With George Andrew Wolff (tenor) as Beethoven and Larry Adams (bass) as Quasimodo. The Hunchback Variations premieres tonight at the Richard Christiansen Theater at Victory Gardens (2433 N. Lincoln Ave.). The play runs through Feb. 19. Tickets may be purchased online or by calling the Victory Garden's box office at 773-871-3000.

The group of Michigan upstarts is adding a personal to a traditional music style and the tour makes a stop at the Park West 8 p.m. tomorrow, with Strange Arrangement & Chicago Farmer.
