Aurora Couple Has Longest Marriage In Illinois

Doris and Dale Chatfield warmed our hearts today with the story of their 73-year marriage. Yes, we know this story was just a cheap ploy by the Sun-Times to get us all mushy for Valentine's Day, but damn it, it was effective.

Dale is 100 years old, and Doris is 91. They've been married since Oct. 29, 1938, and they're the Illinois winners of Worldwide Marriage Encounter's longest marriage contest. Let's just ignore that though, since WWME is a faith-based organization that doesn't recognize same-sex marriage.

Anyway, Dale and Doris live in Aurora and have two children, six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and one great, great grandchild. They met in Denver, where Dale says he "found a jewel."

But Dale and Doris didn't win the national contest. That distinction belongs to Wilbur and Theresa Faiss of Las Vegas, who've been married for 78 years and met at a roller skating rink in Centralia, Ill., in 1930.
