Chicago Voter Registration Lowest In 70 Years

The Chicago Board of Election Commissioners reports that only 1.28 million voters are registered in Chicago, the lowest since the city started keeping track in 1942. On the eve of the March primaries, it's cause for concern.

During the 2008 presidential primaries, 1.31 million voters were registered. It's common for the electorate to be less excited about voting when it isn't a presidential election—oh, wait, it is a presidential election year. Perhaps that shows just how little interest Chicago has for any candidate other than our incumbent.

But if you think there's nothing worth getting excited about this election season, you're sorely mistaken. From the ward committeemen elections to the U.S. Congress, there's plenty to make you tune in.

Primary elections are on March 20. You must be registered to vote by Feb. 21 to cast your ballot. See the Chicago Board of Elections website to register or to find information on candidates.
