Chicago’s Oldest Still-Operating Restaurants

By Amy Cavanaugh in Food on Feb 26, 2012 9:00PM

With most Chicago food media seemingly only focused on openings and other newsy happenings, it can be easy to overlook some of the long-standing dining institutions in town. Domu has rounded up Chicago's oldest still-operating restaurants, and there are 58 that opened in or before 1962. That's incredible, especially given how notoriously difficult the restaurant industry is—restaurants frequently shutter after just a few months or years.

The oldest restaurant is Schaller's Pump, which opened in 1881. The second oldest is Daley's Restaurant, which opened in 1892. The Berghoff, which opened in 1898, is the third oldest, and the last that opened in the 19th century. Cafe Brauer, above, opened in 1908.
