A Rockford, Ill. man was sentenced to 12 years in prison Thursday for a 2010 incident where he ironed a shirt on the back of a 18-month-old girl.

Elliott Moore, 43, pleaded guilty to aggravated battery to a child, which carries a sentencing range of three to seven years in prison. Because of the age of the child, Moore was eligible for a stiffer sentence of between three to 14 years. Moore, who was employed as a live-in care provider to the child's mother, admitted to ironing the shirt on the toddler in Feb. 2010 because he was having difficulty ironing while she was on his lap. Moore told detectives the child later woke up crying and, when he noticed the large, open burn on her back, poured cold water on it and put her in a sleeper.

The child's mother, who was at school at the time, returned home from work and, when she discovered her daughter up all night crying, noticed the burn on her back as she was changing her clothes.
