Gold Star is that rare bar that has been able to maintain its character in the face of multiple neighborhood makeovers, which is why the Wicker Park tavern made our list of non-douchey bars.

Gold Star co-owner Susan Stursberg was recently diagnosed with an aggressive form of pancreatic cancer and is currently undergoing treatment. No matter how one plans for the future, something like this quickly becomes a financial strain, with medications alone costing hundreds of dollars.

Friends of Stursberg and Gold Star have organized a couple of fundraisers in the next week to help offset those costs. 100 percent of tonight's receipts for The Pavement Group's production of Girl You Know It's True at the Chopin Theatre (1543 W. Division St.) will be donated to Stursberg. throughout the remainder of the play's five-week run, The Pavement group will be selling half-pound bags of their Intelligentsia special blend coffee in the Chopin's lounge, with all proceeds earmarked for Stursberg's medical costs.

If you can't make the play, consider heading to Double Door next Saturday. They're holding a benefit concert for Stursberg featuring Joan of Arc, Del Rey, Coffin Pricks, The Ragtones, and Bobby Conn DJ'ing. Admission is $15.

Finally, an online donation page has been set up in Stursberg's name that has raised over $18,000 as of post time.
