The Empty Bottle and Ad Hoc are teaming up to present Banter, a new series that celebrates experimental music and intelligent discourse by mingling art, informative presentations, live music and, of course, dancing.

Each Banter installment will start out with a gallery reception followed by an educational session and open discussion on any of a variety of subjects (the Bottle says topics can range from string theory to Magic: The Gathering). The live music starts at 10 p.m. and transitions into a late-night DJ-driven dance party.

The series will run on the last Friday of each month through October at Wicker Park gallery Public Works. That means the first installment is tomorrow, and it’ll feature Portland’s electronic drone wizard Jason Urick as well as locals Ryley Walker, Radius, and DJ Dustin Drase.

Banter kicks off Friday, April 27 at Public Works, 1539 N Damen, 8 p.m., $5
