Temporary flight restrictions will be in place for small aircraft for the NATO summit from May 19th to 21st, with a shoot to kill order, reports the Sun-Times. The FAA issued a flight advisory which bans non commercial aircraft from flying below 18,000 feet or within 10 nautical miles of the downtown area.
According to the advisory issued [PDF], pilots who do not comply may be “intercepted, detained and interviewed by law enforcement security/personnel.” If it’s determined the aircraft poses “an imminent security threat,” the government is prepared to use deadly force.
Regularly scheduled commercial passenger and cargo planes will still be allowed to fly, along with any aircraft supporting the Secret Service, military aircraft and other approved law enforcement planes. In addition, a 30 nautical mile “outer ring” with restrictions for small planes will be in place.
