An old gangster hideout in northern Illinois is up for sale on eBay. The Mineola Hotel with its lounge and marina and its 17 acres of lakefront property on Fox Lake, has a starting bid of $2 million. Owner Pete Jakstas told the Daily Herald he figured by putting it on eBay he'd get bids nationwide to help sell it to "the right bidder." Built in 1884, the Mineola is on the National Register of Historical Places as the largest wood frame building in Illinois.
In his listing, Jakstas writes:
The hotel needs to be restored. The pictures are a representation of what the hotel looks like now & what the original building looked like. In her day the Mineola was one of Al Capone's rest areas. He and his crew would come out to the Mineola to relax and get away from their problems as the Mineola was a safe house.
Jakstas has been trying to sell the property for a couple of years now. It was condemned in the spring of 2011 due to water damage, but upon second review an engineer deemed it safe.
