Shedd Aquarium Welcomes Newborn Dolphin

By Samantha Abernethy in Arts & Entertainment on May 29, 2012 7:00PM

Shedd Aquarium's Pacific white-sided dolphin gave birth last night to a bouncing baby dolphin. Gender has not been determined yet, so it doesn't have a name either. They can tell us the calf is about three feet long and weighs about 25 pounds. Mother and baby are both doing well and will remain under 24-hour observation for several months.

"Shortly after the birth, the calf swam to the surface, took its first breath, and began to swim and bond with its mother," the Shedd says. You won't be able to go see them just yet. The Secluded Bay will be closed today, so the video below will have to do. Congratulations, Piquet and Lii!
