2012_6_2_cps.gif Chicago Public Schools and the Service Employees International Union, which represents some 5,500 janitors, assistants, security officers and other CPS support staff reached a contract agreement on the eve of a potential strike authorization vote from the Chicago Teacher’s Union. NBC5 reports Jean-Claude Brizard said the deal shows that CPS is able to negotiate:

“The SEIU contract and the UNITE HERE contract I think prove that if two sides come together, even if far apart, can come to common ground. I think there’s room for the CTU as well if they allow the process to be followed.”

The contract negotiated includes a “reasonable wage increase,” along with a pledge that no union jobs would be outsourced, according to the Sun-Times. SEIU Local 73 Vice President Taalib-Din Diyad also said the contract “keeps health care costs down and maintains fair discipline language.”

The Chicago Teachers Union plans to hold an authorization vote to strike on Wednesday.
