Mister Lies made his Chicago debut only three weeks ago when he played the Empty Bottle with Supreme Cuts, and he’s already stolen our hearts. Formerly from Connecticut, the now Chicago-based producer—real name Nick Zanca—makes the kind of triphop beats that are perfect for staring wistfully down long stretches of road during blue-hour drives.

Mister Lies’ first EP, Hidden Neighbors, is 18 minutes of downtempo, atmospheric grooves—deep and drowsy synth with warped vocal samples to match, shimmering tones to contrast, and brisk drum beats to keep your head bobbing and swaying. Check it out for yourself; the whole EP is free to download.

That EP was recorded earlier this year, but Zanca’s already working on his next release, his first full-length album, which will be available early 2013 through Lefse Records. He’s also planning to drop a 7-inch single, “Dionysian" b/w "Waveny," in October as part of Lefse’s 7-inch series, and he’s shared a taste of what’s to come by releasing the A-side over at his SoundCloud page.

You can catch Mister Lies perform live Sept. 3 when he opens for Xiu Xiu at Schubas. But for now, here’s this video for “False Astronomy” off Hidden Neighbors:
