Lincoln Park Zoo Welcomes Rare Bali Mynah Chicks

By Samantha Abernethy in Arts & Entertainment on Aug 16, 2012 8:20PM

The Lincoln Park Zoo hatched three rare Bali mynah chicks recently, the first successful hatching at the zoo in 12 years. The population of the critically endangered mynah in the wild was at about 15 in the early 1990s, as the black market cage-bird trade decimated their numbers.

Today there are 115 wild birds on Bali, with an estimated 1,000 in captivity. The Lincoln Park Zoo has hatched 31 mynahs since it joined conservation efforts in 1972. You can't see the baby chicks at the zoo yet, but you can see the adults in the open, free-flight exhibit at the zoo’s McCormick Bird House.
