CTA Board Approves De-Crowding Plan

By Samantha Abernethy in News on Sep 12, 2012 9:50PM

The Chicago Transit Authority board approved its controversial de-crowding plan, which cuts 12 bus routes and segments from two other routes, while increasing service on six rail lines and 48 bus routes.

The biggest train service bumps will be for the Red, Blue and Brown lines. The Pink and Yellow lines are the only train routes not benefitting from the plan.

The most vocal outcry from riders was regarding the discontinuation of express buses between Uptown and the Loop and the discontinuation of the #11 Lincoln bus between Lincoln Park and Lincoln Square. Among the complaints is a lack of handicap-accessible El stops that will be alternatives to those buses.

On the chopping block:
#X28 Stony Island Express
#64 Foster-Canfield
#69 Cumberland/East River
#122 Ill. Center/Ogilvie Express
#123 Ill. Center/Union Express
#129 West Loop/South Loop
#144 Marine/Michigan Express
#145 Wilson/Michigan Express

Served by PACE
#17 Westchester
#49A South Western
#56A North Milwaukee
#90N North Harlem

Segments Discontinued
#1 Indiana/Hyde Park south of 35th
#11 Lincoln/Sedgwick between Western and Fullerton avenues
