Experience The Great Shave with Merz Apothecary

2012_10_19_greatshave.jpg Traditional wet shaving has exploded in popularity over the last few years as men realize the style points and cost benefits they can gain by using double edged or straight razors, and boar-bristled shaving brushes swirling shave soaps into creamy lathers. Not only does the more traditional equipment simply look and feel classier, it is often a good choice for men with sensitive skin, or those who are prone to razor bumps. Chicago’s own Merz Apothecary is one of the country’s largest retailers in high-quality, traditional shave equipment and accessories, and they want to share their knowledge and expertise with wet-shaving fans and those of you who are not yet a convert to this seemingly old-fashioned ritual.

On Wednesday Oct. 24 at 6p.m., Merz Apothecary will host The Great Shave 2012, the country’s largest celebration dedicated to traditional wet shaving and men’s grooming. The event, held at Dank Haus, is not only an evening celebration, but also offers two afternoon educational events, one with Lynn Abrams, the “godfather” of wet shaving, who will lead you through the basics of stropping and honing a straight razor, and a seminar about shave soaps with YouTube shave tutor, Mark Herro, aka Mantic59.

This event is not just for the menfolk, however. The ladies will find plenty to enjoy not only in the products, but also the food, drink, and entertainment. Music is provided by The Claudettes, with food from Browntrout, Gene’s Sausage Shop, Chubby Wieners, Lincoln Square newcomer Le Cafe, and arguably the best samosas in Chicago from Annapurna. Half Acre provides the beer, and Few Spirits will be on hand to taste out their locally-distilled wares.

A Merz Apothecary pop-up shop will also be at the event, so you can purchase the items that catch your fancy during the evening. And according to event organizer Anthony Qaiyum, the goody bag is worth more than the price for admission. As you can see from the above video, these guys and ladies are passionate about the product and the event. With that kind of excitement, we think The Great Shave will be a great time.

The Great Shave 2012 will be held at Dank Haus, 4740 N. Western Ave. Tickets and more details are available here.
