Overanalyzing Jay Cutler's Every Step, We Swear To God

Cutler Mouth

Last Monday, sports media across the area were saluting the toughness of Bears quarterback Jay Cutler after he was tossed around like a rag doll by Detroit's Ndamukong Suh. That was fleeting before Cutler was named the least-liked quarterback in the NFL.

Cutler's on-field temperament has been an ongoing narrative all season, so it isn't going to subside now. The latest incident involves lip reading. Cameras captured Cutler appearing to mouth something while looking into the stands as the Bears beaded to the locker room for halftime Sunday. What did Cutler say? The consensus of people who claim to be lip readers is that Cutler was frustrated by Bears fans' reactions to the team's first half performance and said "These fucking fans, I swear to God."

For all we know, Cutler could have been pissed by the puff on top of his hat. ("The fucking hats, I swear to God.") Or he could have had a "faker" moment.

For what it's worth, Cutler told media after the game the fans were right to boo.

"I'd boo us, too," he said. "I told those guys it was a boo-worthy performance, if you will. It's pathetic offensively what we put out there. It wasn't up to standard product-wise. So we've got to get better. We know that, the fans know that."

As Benjy noted earlier in his recap of the game, there was plenty of room for boo birds all around: Carolina did outgain the bears on offense which is as much an indictment of the Bears' defensive play. But both units held fast when it mattered and Cutler shined in the final drive that led to Robbie Gould's game-winning field goal.
