Motorists and pedestrians who use the Wells Street Bridge should have their detours at the ready starting next Monday. That’s when the Chicago Department of Transportation will close down the bridge for a year for an extensive reconstruction.

CDOT will replace the bridge’s trusses and railings; steel framing for the upper railway and lower road structures; electrical and mechanical components; and bridge houses while preserving the roaring 20s look of the bridge. Service on CTA’s Brown and Purple Lines will be shut down for two nine-day stretches in March and April 2013 as CTA rebuilds the structure junction at Lake and Wells—aka Tower 18.

Vehicular and pedestrian traffic will be re-routed on LaSalle and Clark Streets. The #11 and #125 buses will be re-routed via Kinzie, LaSalle and Wacker back to Wells, and bicycle traffic can use Clark Street to cross the river.
