This came to our tips inbox this morning: a Brown Line rider snapped a photo of one of the emergency exits at the Paulina Brown Line station locked using a short cable and a padlock.

This is against the law for obvious reasons. Having exited the Brown Line at Paulina before, we've noticed passengers exiting at Paulina frequently use the emergency exits to leave the station. So we understand the rationale, but that doesn't make it right.

A closer look at the photo shows whoever applied the cables and padlocks may have done this more as a deterrent than anything. The cables don't appear to be connected to anything on the other side of the gates—a hearty push is all that would be needed for that emergency gate to open.
