Believe it or not, there are a few non-holiday shows playing this time of year. Take a break from the trees and tinsel and go see them.

The Letters

Two words: Kate Fry. If you haven’t seen this Chicago favorite perform yet, now’s your chance to catch her in an intimate, two-person play about government censorship and suspicion in 1930s Russia. Plus, the Writer’s Theatre stage is located inside a cozy bookstore in Glencoe — odd but totally charming. The show runs through Sunday, March 3.

Writer’s Theatre, 664 Vernon Ave., Glencoe, 847-242-6000 or online.

The Other Cinderella

Sub the fairy godmother with a sassy Jamaican godmama, add original music and forget the boring ugly stepsisters. Leave it to the Black Ensemble Theater to put a wholly entertaining, Afro-centric twist on the classic fairytale. The show runs through Sunday, Jan. 13.

Black Ensemble Theater, 4450 N. Clark St., 773-769-4451 or online.

Singin’ in the Rain

Catch the stage version of everyone’s favorite movie musical featuring tap-happy leading characters attempting to navigate the politics of love and showbusiness. It’s family-friendly, wholesome nostalgia — all tied up in a bow. The show runs through Sunday, Jan. 13.

100 Drury Ln., Oakbrook Terrance, 630-530-0111 or online.
