Another warm day in Chicago, another day of multiple shootings. Eleven people were injured in overnight shootings on the city’s South and West sides, including five at a currency exchange and an off-duty Cook County corrections officer who finished his shift.
The corrections officer was shot around 2 a.m. on Interstate 57. He pulled over near 95th and State Street because he suspected being followed and those suspicions unfortunately proved to be warranted; he was shot twice in the shoulder and had another bullet graze his chin. The officer was in stable condition at Stroger Hospital.
Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart said it’s possible the shooter may have wanted the officer’s car.
The site of the most violence Monday night was at a currency exchange near 75th Street and Exchange Avenue. Five victims ranging in age from 23 to 44 were injured when two gunmen walked up to them and opened fire in what is believed to be gang retaliation. Four of the victims were in critical condition, but have now been stabilized.
The shootings add to Chicago's 2012 total. According to the blog Crime in Chicago, 2,475 people have been shot in Chicago this year. Chicago's 2012 homicide totals surpassed 2011's numbers nearly a month ago.
