Police say seven students were injured when a 10-year-old student sprayed Mace at a South Side elementary school. Police are interviewing the boy to determine whether or not he sprayed it intentionally.

It happened in the cafeteria around 8:40 a.m. Wednesday at Beasley Magnet Academic Center, and the Sun-Times reports at least five ambulances were called to the scene.

According to the Tribune, officials initially said it was pepper spray, but later said they could not firm what was in the liquid that was sprayed.

“Seven students were transported to nearby hospitals as a precautionary measure after being sprayed with an unidentified liquid by a fellow student this morning,” CPS spokeswoman Marielle Sainvilus told the Sun-Times.

CPS says the student has been removed from the premises, and parents were notified of the event immediately.
