Drew Fox is making no small plans as he looks to extend Chicago’s craft beer boom into Northwest Indiana with his 18th Street Brewery in Gary. Fox hopes to have his beers on shelves and taps soon thanks to a contract brewing agreement with Pipeworks Brewing, where he also works as a brewer. A Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for building out the brewery (once they find a space) has already exceeded its initial $12,000 goal, with 11 days to reach a new target of $20,000.

Establishing a business in Gary requires some chutzpah and commitment; Fox has those in spades and we’re eager to see him pull this off. In addition to the Kickstarter campaign, 18th Street Brewery is getting a helping hand from Pipeworks and Maria’s Community Bar Jan. 25 from 6-9 p.m.

Maria’s has a half-barrel of a collaborative beer from 18th Street and Pipeworks called The Brotherhood, a Patersbier (Belgian-style Abbey Single ale) brewed with four kinds of citrus zest were used in its brewing: lemon, lime, grapefruit, and orange.

Proceeds from each glass sold will go toward 18th Street Brewery’s buildout fund.

Maria’s Community Bar is located at 960 W. 31st Street.
