The Lauren Wolf Band recently won Live Nation's Battle of the Bands competition and is fresh off a performance at House of Blues Chicago. Catch them this Friday, April 5, at 8 p.m. as part of a bill including Gramps the Vamp, The Sweets, The Outfit and Shivering Timbers. Admission is $6 in advance, $10 at the door.

We caught Canadian rockers Boats opening for Free Energy last month. As the lead singer approached the microphone with his red beard and lumberjack-esque flannel, we expected a deep voice and soothing Canadian sounds. Instead we got slapped in the face with rocking beats and the singer's strange, entrancing falsetto. Their new album Fairway Full Of Miners has been a favorite of ours ever since. It kicks off with the tune "Animated GIFs" and the line, "And all your friends will turn to shit," and things get weirder from there with not just one, but two songs about Bears. Boats performs Tuesday, April 2 at the Double Door with Cheers Elephant and Nervous Cloud. Grab your $8 tickets now. Doors open at 8 p.m.
