Sun-Times Lays Off Entire Photo Staff

The Sun-Times laid off its entire photo staff, about 20 employees, on Thursday morning. The paper says it plans to use freelancers from now on. The Sun-Times released the following statement:
"The Sun-Times business is changing rapidly and our audiences are consistently seeking more video content with their news. We have made great progress in meeting this demand and are focused on bolstering our reporting capabilities with video and other multimedia elements. The Chicago Sun-Times continues to evolve with our digitally savvy customers, and as a result, we have had to restructure the way we manage multimedia, including photography, across the network."
We're sad to see the Sun-Times cutting back on original content again. In March, the Sun-Times shut down its food section and replaced it with "TASTE," a section "produced separately by Custom Media Solutions, meaning the content won't be produced by Sun-Times food writers."
