Improvisation can be the seed for new and memorable works from today’s choreographers, and this week, The Dance Center of Columbia College Chicago celebrates the art form with the 2013 Dance Improvisation Festival. The week-long festival is filled with performances as well as workshops and discussions, and the whole thing kicks off tonight at Links Hall with an opening performance from improvisers from all over the Midwest, including here in Chicago.

Some of the featured artists involved include choreographer and iLAND Artistic Director Jennifer Monson, who will be presenting a new work on Thursday evening called Live Dancing Archive (and will also participate in the post-performance discussion on the piece), and veteran dancers Susan Sgorbati and Peter Schmitz, who along with Monson will lead a free panel discussion on Friday evening. All three will also be teaching workshops at The Dance Center throughout the week.

Ticket prices vary for each performance. Check The Dance Center’s website for tickets and show times, as well as more information about the workshops.

Links Hall is at 3111 N. Western Ave. The Dance Center is at 1306 S. Michigan Ave.
