You know what the most important rule of fashion is? Buying clothes that fit. You know what most people don't really do? Buy clothes that fit. And since every dude in this city wears them approximately 100% of the time, jeans seem to be the worst offenders. Below are just a couple of the classic styles you've probably seen lurking around the city.

Dad Jeans. The '90s are back full-force, but that doesn't mean it's ok to embrace the look a million dads made famous. Replete with that iconic blue-but-faded wash, wide pocket placement, 12" fly, and a just-right fit through the waist, this is a style really only acceptable for the most seasoned of dads. Dad jeans, if worn at all, should always be coupled with a fresh pair of white Reeboks.

Skin Tight. There was a time when a certain type could pull off the painted-on look, but most of those guys are either on VH1 reality shows or no longer with us. If you want to be taken seriously these days, you can use two tests when you're trying on your jeans: 1, are they riding up your butt? And 2, when you sit down is it painful? If you answered yes to these, it's time to take a pass.

Sag. There's never a good time for sagging pants; check your waist size and buy it. Nobody wants to see your boxers, and they especially don't want to look at you hiking up your jeans like a dress every time you're about to climb some stairs.

Major Distressing. It's been a thing for years to add fading, whiskering, holes, patches, and stains at the factory to make jeans look worn, but we've finally reached a point where it's just not okay. Do your patches make you look like you came from a commune? Are the holes big enough to make you worry about the state of your leg hair? Give it up! Stick to slight fading and dark or black washes until you're ready to move on to more advanced looks.
