Carlos Villanueva gathered his bearings after a rocky first inning where he allowed two runs, one of them on a triple by Carlos Beltran, but the Cubs lineup fell short of getting Villanueva a no-decision. Villanueva's lasted six innings and struck out four. Starlin Castro homered in the eighth inning for the Cubs.

The White Sox and Phillies game was postponed Friday night but the Sox still made news by trading reliever Matt Thornton to the Boston Red Sox for outfield prospect Brandon Jacobs, who has raw talent and is only now starting to put his skills together in the minors. Thornton has been a steady veteran presence on a White Sox bullpen full of young pitchers.
